For the record, my two favourite Herberts.

Two deserved favourites! The second is a classic - I do like a Herbert with that sort of vicious side* - but somehow I'd managed to miss the first. It's strangely endearing.

*Although I have a soft spot for this parody by the then cast.

Now that's what I call fan service!
Youtube really is a rabbithole. I spend hours down there last night, ostensibly conducting research but mostly just watching different versions of the sane songs from all over the place.

Damn, why doesn't my work involve that kind of research? I picked the wrong career! Though it certainly wouldn't help my productivity. It's the sidebar. There you are, happily looking at just one thing, and it shows you another four that just can't ignored and they show you others, and before you know it you've got 6 tabs open and you're watching someone's vid of vampire kittens riding a lawnmower. I'm very grateful to the Vampires fans who've uploaded so many versions, though! How else would I see the Japanese version with Herbert wearing a loincloth?

I shall give thought to the lyric.

All I wanted to do was show the kids the 1970s Birds Eye Peas "pop" advert to explain why I burst into song when they kept making popping noises with my glasses case and we were there until 11 p.m. watching The Wombles, Trumpton and Bod via the changing history of Lucozade advertising.

*promises will finish watching the vampires one day*

"Fresh as the moment when the pod went pop"? I said to Wolfgang just the other day that when I'm demented in old people's home, the last thing my ravaged brain will lose is 1970s advertising jingles. It's uncanny how the things stick.

I had forgotten about Bod, but it sounds like an evening well-spent (I'm jealous of you for having children who are prepared to share your interests. Mine smile in amused tolerance but wouldn't dream of watching 70s TV).

Mine will be the Shake'n'Vac jingle.

Did you see the story about the Dresden old people's home that recreated typical East German rooms for the residents with Alzheimer's disease who could remember things from the era?
azdak: Face of Klimt's Music II (Default)
I didn't see that! I wonder if it was inspired by Goodbye, Lenin?

It's certainly a nice cheap solution, especially if they recreated the food and (lack of) consumer goods.

Yes. I said that and they had no idea what I was talking about so I went to find evidence.

Mine play the saxophone and found Bod interesting in terms of jazzy theme tunes. But they might just be being polite. I am expecting the middle one to turn grumpy on hitting 13 in three weeks' time.

You never know, he might stay lovely. My younger one did. I think it's partly that people who are very empathetic and socially skilled have more effective ways of getting what they want than permanent rows. My elder one immediately goes on the attack if she's feeling defensive, whereas the younger one is all sweet reason and constantly gets her own way because she's so nice about it.

Yes. There was a period where eldest was about 13 and middle one about 10 when she was constantly furiously accusing him of being evil and sneaky by going about getting his own way by being nice and felt that this was deeply unfair and cheating and we were all being tricked by him. But they do get on a lot better now, having accepted that they are just both very different people And That Is OK, at least that's what I keep telling them.

That sounds very promising for the terrible teens, though I can see how annoying it would be for Daughter.

The sidebar is an irresistible lure, it is true.
I've been very lucky this summer and have two musicals to do, although I am slightly dreading the second one as I suspect it will be dire.
If I could still remember how to edit music videos, I'd be sorely tempted to make one of that scene using an assortment of Herberts, each singing in his own language.

Two musicals, your cup runneth over! Hopefully if the second one is dire it will at least be dire in an amusing way.

I'm fairly sure there is at least one multi-lingual Totale Finsternis video out there, but multiple Herberts would be more fun. I didn't know you'd done vids - MfU back in the day?
azdak: Face of Klimt's Music II (Default)
No, Buffy! I have evidently come full circle on vampires (I had a MASSIVE Spike-crush). By the time I got on to MfU I'd got out of practice with vidding (and also there was bluemeanybeanie producing utterly brilliant, near professional-standard vids that made everyone else's look clumsy and amateurish, so I would have been too embarrassed to try. Truly the great is the enemy of the good!)

I had a MASSIVE Spike-crush

Excellent taste, obviously.

BTW, would you translate the first line as "If love is within you" or "When love is within you"? It has to be "When" when Herbert says it, but "if" seems more likely for a dating guide.
azdak: Face of Klimt's Music II (Default)
I have decided to go with "If" the first time and "When" the second, and bollocks to continuity.
nineveh_uk: Photo of Edward Cullen from Twilight with the text "I sparkle, therefore I am" (Sparkly vampire)
Bollocks to continuity is an excellent motto. I find the German who, what, when words* etc strangely difficult to remember. Every time I hear wenn, wer, or was I think of the English one that sounds the same, and then have to mechanically remember what it actually means.

What I now want to know is why a vampire's library has a dating guide in it.

*Surely there is a grammatical term for these?
nineveh_uk: Photo of Edward Cullen from Twilight with the text "I sparkle, therefore I am" (Sparkly vampire)
Being easily lead, I somehow found myself watching some videos this evening and found myself rather warming to "if" for Alfred. It has an uncertainty/ambiguity to it that works, especially when being sung after a scene in which however much love is chiming in him like music, the beloved didn't care.
azdak: Face of Klimt's Music II (Default)
I also think that the the guide must have been written for the inexperienced, and since "when" implies that this is not the first time, it doesn't feel quite right. Whereas in Herbert's case it's clearly not a matter of "if" but "whenever".

Someone did post the original title of the book and it's along the lines of "How to Winne ye hearte of a comeley damzel". I wanted to translate it as "Love for Dummies" but ended up with "Romance for Beginners" on the grounds that if the text is going to serve as the basis for other translations, it had better not be too culturally specific.

if the text is going to serve as the basis for other translations, it had better not be too culturally specific.

I have been known to send marketing-type translations off to agencies with comments such as "this line was a pun in Finnish which means X and refers to Y. My English version makes an entirely different joke but I am just telling you the original in case the people using my English version to turn it into German and Norwegian can do anything better with it in their languages". But I assume my commercial context is different from yours. Also this is when they have specifically said "can you do it in a day because we need your translation to produce all the others".

It's always slightly bizarre to be reminded that the original is in English (indeed I have the DVD. It was cheap, and I had enjoyed it as a teenager. It has the one thing missing from the musical, namely a skiing scene). Much as I'd love an English production to have "Love for Dummies", "Romance for Beginners" does have a more universal feel...

I found a bit of the original on youtube when I was trying to find out whether Sarah calls her father "Daddy" or "Papa" in the original, and I enjoyed it far more than I was expecting to.
