I gave Wolfgang Hustle for Christmas and he gave me NCIS. There's no arguing over who got the better deal, but you certainly get a lot of NCIS for your money (23 episodes per season, as opposed to a measly 6), so I'm not complaining. It did strike me, though, that at some point in the planning stage the two programmes must have looked pretty much identical. I suppose there's a template somewhere that says "Of 5 major characters, one must be the supremely intelligent leader, who's capable of turning unexpectedly nasty; one must be the obnoxious puppy dog, who thinks he's irresistible to the opposite sex and keeps getting smacked down by the rest of the team; one must be the fixer, who is not only a computer whizz but can handle absolutely anything technical, or, if not, will know a man who can; one must be the girl; and one must be a Man from UNCLE." Oh all right, "One must be a grandfatherly figure who gives the youngsters the benefit of his experience." Later in development, of course, came all the little differences that go to prove the adage "It ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it."

While I like to complain, with Hustle, about the unnecessary whitewashing of our team of conmen, with NCIS it's the absolute obsession with terrorists that gets up my nose (no wonder Americans are paranoid if this is the sort of stuff they get served up as light entertainment), not to mention the whitewashing of the military (I just LOVED the episode where they visit Guantanamo Bay and Gibbs has to tick off the guards for being too nice to the prisoners. Thank God he was there to sort them out, eh?). My family has various catchphrases we've acquired over the years (the latest is nabbed directly from Hustle, "It's amazin'," said in our best Stacie accent). Others include "Good plan, Spike" (from Guess What) and "Shall we shog?" from Henry V. But the one that comes out most often watching NCIS, as Gibbs embarks upon yet another patriotic spiel, is "You can write this shit, George!" (from Harrison Ford's famous observation to George Lucas when filming Star Wars - "You can write this shit, George, but you sure can't say it!")
