I got this as it was dirt cheap on amazon, and wow, is it gripping. And BRILLIANTLY acted. The only BBC series I've watched in the last five years have been Hustle and Life on Mars and most of the cast of both seem to be turning up in State of Play. John Simm! Philip Glenister! Marc Warren! And also Bill Nighy, who I have never seen before, but *swoon*, sign me up to watch anything else he ever does. And also - which is something of a relief after Life on Mars - several excellent female roles, only one of which revolves around sexual relationships. I love the shifting alliances and emnities between the police, the journos and the politicians, even though ultimately all of them - or some of all of them - are on the same side and have the same goals. And I adore the way that, as the conspiracy widens, more and more characters are introduced, so that you get a really visceral sense of what a hydra the good guys are tackling. We still have 3 eps to go, and are racking our brains to figure out who the bad guys are and what they want, but apart from agreeing that it has to be All. About. Oil., we still have no real clue. Great stuff!
