We watched the solitary "extra" on the Hustle S3 DVD last night, an interview with the cast, and after a while Wolfgang said "Do you think Marc Warren is having an affair with Robert Vaughn, the way he sucks up to him? And he's practically got his arm draped round his shoulders!" It just goes to show, you can affect to despise fanfic as much as you like, the slashers will get you in the end!
The interview with the cast was interesting chiefly because it gave a glimpse into the hollowness at the heart of Hustle. At one point the interviewer said "Do we find out more about the characters in this series?" And Adrian Lester smiled tactfully and said "We get to see them doing more cons." And that, I suspect, is the reason why there is so little Hustle fanfic, because it lacks that soap oper-y element of on-going character development. Even the relationships that hinted at potential development in S1 - Ash and Mickey's ex-wives, the Mickey-Stacie UST - have been quietly dropped, and since Danny seems to have largely got over his crush on Stacie, that leaves no inconvenient angst to taint the perfect surface. It's beautiful, it's gorgeously lit, I adore how stylised it all is, but it isn't fic material.
