Now I know the origin of the myth that sunlight destroys vampires. We are currently suffering from an excess of mosquitoes here in Austria. It's not a plague of Swedish proportions - at least no one has yet suggested busting out the DDT - but you can't sit outside in the evenings unless you're willing to be perpetually nibbled at. Today I took the dogs up the hill for a walk in the woods. By nine in the morning it was 30 degrees in the sunshine and significantly cooler in the shade, but no sooner had we reached the shelter of the trees than the Mosquito Squadron zoomed into attack. Five minutes later I came running hell for leather out of the woods and flung myself into the first wodge of sunlight I could find.
