Today we heard that Akbar has won his appeal against the rejection of his asylum application. Theoretically, the Ministry of the Interior can appeal against this new decision, but his lawyer considers it highly unlikely that they will do that, so to all intents and purposes, he has been granted asylum.

I am so relieved I almost don't have enough emotional room to be happy. It's been a long and costly struggle but worth every penny. Now he needs to pass his exams, find a job and start building a proper life. He's done so well so far, I don't imagine he'll have too much trouble with the rest :-)

What amazing news, congratulations to Akbar and to you all! I'd been wondering how things were going. Best wishes to him in building his life on a secure footing without the fear of being sent back. He sounds like a young man eminently capable to making a success of things given half a chance.

It was a wonderful Christmas present, especially against a background of very saddening denials of asylum to other refugees we sponsor. One is currently couch-surfing to avoid deportation while we wait for his appeal to the constitutional court to be given the go-ahead.

He still can't quite believe it. But he's already making job-hunting plans :-)

Up and down is the answer - this is the first "up" in a while, but boy, what an up it is!

It can all go a bit wibbly once people are finally able to feel secure because that's when they have the mental space to start thinking about all the things they've been through, but he's got you for support and that's so good.

This is an excellent point. Thank you for making it, because I was indeed thinking "This is where it all starts to go right for him" and not "Now the pressure is off, this is where it all catches up with him."
