There probably is a less vulgar original of the song, but I have no idea how it goes! (all the WWI songs I know come from Oh!What A Lovely War!, so with the exception of the two "adapted" hymns, I only know the soldiers' versions).
I'd love a book of WW2 songs - I don't think I know ANY.
And your mother is quite right, one must lower one's standards when it comes to History :-)
